I just got back from a nice 7-day Carnival eastern Caribbean cruise with Tracy and a couple people from work. It was awesome! We had a great time. The cruise ship, the Carnival Triumph, left from Miami, FL, and stopped at Half Moon Cay, Bahamas; St. Thomas, USVI; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands. The food was great, plus we would get free sushi almost every night before dinner.

Photo gallery available here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/marcus.kwok/2008051020080517EasternCaribbeanCruise

Our traveling group: John and his wife Cindy; Bill and his wife Lisa; Terry and his wife Lou, as well as their grandchildren Alyssa and James; and Tracy and myself.

2008-05-10 - Miami
Tracy and I had to catch a 09:45 flight to MIA from BWI. Tracy had never been on a plane before, so she was a little nervous, but the flight went very smoothly. When we landed, we met the Carnival representative for our transfer from the airport to the port terminal where the cruise ships were located. We got to the port where we were greeted by a very rude baggage handler. We went through the embarkation process and boarded the ship at around 15:00. Our room was already prepared, so we went down to check it out. Our luggage didn't arrive until later that evening. We went to dinner at 18:00 and then went to the variety show that night, which served as a sort of preview for the rest of the week's on-ship entertainment. After that, we walked around and checked out the rest of the ship, then called it a night since we were tired from the traveling. When we got back to the room, we saw that Carnival leaves a towel folded into the shape of an animal in your room as part of their turn-down service. We got some sort of seal or sea lion, but since this our first experience with it and we didn't realize that we would be getting different animals every night, we failed to take a picture of this one.

2008-05-11 - Half Moon Cay
We arrived at Half Moon Cay around 09:00. Half Moon Cay is so small that the cruise ship couldn't dock, so we had to take a little tender boat from the ship to the island. Half Moon Cay is owned by Carnival, and we just had a nice day at the beach. Our traveling group split a nice cabana on the beach, which made the heat much more bearable. We were provided with snacks and drinks in the cabana, and they also provided lunch for us on the island. However, I had failed to reapply sunblock after the last time getting out of the water, and so subsequently I got a little sunburned on my shoulders while waiting for the tender boat to take us back to the ship. The show for tonight was the comedy hypnotist Asad. It was kind of funny, but it felt like a lot of it could have been staged. Tonight's towel animal: a bunny rabbit, with Tracy's sunglasses on it.

2008-05-12 - Day at sea
As part of the daytime entertainment, there was an ice carving demonstration. We watched a guy carve a block of ice into the shape of the cruise ship, using only hand chisels, in a matter of only 15 minutes. This was also our first formal dinner night, where we had to get all dressed up. John and Bill wore tuxedos, but Terry and myself just wore suits. When I saw Terry, I saw how sunburned his face was from Half Moon Cay. Tonight was an "Around the World" show by the Carnival singers and dancers. Tracy and I made it through about 10 minutes of it before we decided it was lame and left. Tonight's towel animal: another bunny rabbit.

2008-05-13 - St. Thomas
Before we left we had decided that our entire traveling group should go on at least one shore excursion together, so we opted for the Ultimate Island Experience. I forgot our tour guide's name, but he told us we could call him Trini, since he was from Trinidad and Tobago. We first went up a mountain on Skyline Drive and stopped at Drake's Seat, which provided a nice vantage point and photo opportunity for the island. We then stopped at Magens Bay, considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, for a couple hours. The water was crystal clear and the sand was very clean. After we left the beach, we stopped at Blackbeard's Castle. We walked around the houses and saw a bunch of statues of pirates. There is also a rum store with free rum punch. After exploring the grounds, we ended up in the main shopping district of St. Thomas. Tracy and I split off from the group here and just wandered around the streets. We bought some more aloe for my sunburn; it cost $11.99 for the bottle, but Tracy noticed that there were actually two price tags on it: it originally cost $7.99 but they jacked up the price for all the cruise tourists. Eventually we stopped for lunch and tasty mango rum frozen cocktails at the Happy Buzzard. After lunch we caught a taxi back to the pier. There was definitely no trouble catching a taxi: it seemed that every other car that drove by would be a taxi and the drivers would ask us out the window if we needed a ride. The taxis had a flat rate of $4/person back to the pier from anywhere in the city, and they were basically big converted pickup trucks with a bunch of seats in the back, so after we got on, the driver would pull over to the side of the road and wait until it filled up before continuing onto the pier. Interestingly, everyone in St. Thomas drives on the left side of the road, but since they also import most of their cars from America, the steering wheel is also on the left side of the car. When we got to the pier, there was a middle school steel drum band playing for donations, so we watched them for a few minutes before getting back on the ship. Tracy and I watched the sun set behind the mountains in the distance from the top deck of the ship. Since we had eaten recently, we skipped dinner and filled up on sushi. Tonight's show was a magic show by the magicians Kevin and Caruso. It was a decent show, and pretty fun. We went to the all-ages show; they had an adults-only show at midnight with more adult-oriented humor, but we had to wake up early the next day for our shore excursion, so we missed it. Tonight's towel animal: a monkey hanging from the light fixture.

2008-05-14 - San Juan
In San Juan, we went on the Rainforest excursion with John and Cindy. It was a lot more bus riding and less walking than we were expecting, but it was still nice. Our tour guide Nelson was native to Puerto Rico and friendly and knowledgeable, but his presentation could have used some work. After about a 30 or 45 minute bus ride, we stopped at El Portal Rainforest Information Center for about 20 minutes. We then stopped at Yokahu Tower for another photo opportunity. Our tour guide challenged us to count the steps to the top of the tower; I counted 96, as did most of the other people in our tour group, but apparently we didn't count the 2 steps at the top of the tower. We then continued on to the main part of El Yunque, the rainforest. We walked along a short trail, and on the way down we stopped at La Coca Falls, a nice waterfall down El Yunque Mountain. There is another waterfall called La Mina Falls, but to get to it you had to walk along a 45-minute trail, which we didn't have time for. One of the other tour buses broke down, so Nelson dropped us off at a family-owned restaurant and gift shop while he picked them up. He told us that only three families living in the rainforest park refused to sell their land to the government, but that these families could continue to live there as long as they never sell their land to any outsiders. The food was all fried; the tacos were completely fried and unlike any other tacos I've ever had. They were good, but nothing spectacular. However, they did have commercially-available Ketchup and Mayonnaise (with garlic!) mixed together in a single bottle. It basically tasted like Thousand Island dressing without the pickles, as one would expect. Nelson came back and drove us back to San Juan. On the way, he stopped for a local who was selling these big coconut cookie-type things; I think it was just coconut and a lot of sugar. He let him on the bus to sell us them, then we continued on our way. We got back to the city, and John and Cindy went shopping and Tracy and I explored the city on the way back to the ship. Tonight's towel animal: a sea turtle.

2008-05-15 - Grand Turk
After we left San Juan, the waters started getting really choppy; previously they had been extremely calm and smooth. Due to this, we arrived in Grand Turk about half an hour late, so they extended our stay there by half an hour to compensate. Tracy and I went to the beach, but the ground in the water was all rocky and slimy instead of sandy, so we went to Margaritaville, where there was a swimming pool with a pool bar. We ran into John and Cindy there, and eventually Bill and Lisa, since their snuba excursion got delayed due to the high winds and choppy waters. We hung out there and watched the various competitions the DJ had, such as the strongman competition (doing pushups with some girl lying on their back) and the booty shaking competition. We got back on the boat and took a nap until the second formal dinner night. That night was also the big midnight buffet, where they make sculptures out of the food and let you take pictures of it before opening it up to be eaten. Tonight's towel animal: an elephant wearing my sunglasses.

2008-05-16 - Day at sea
Cindy's birthday was on Saturday so we got birthday cake at dinner. After we left the Turks and Caicos area, we hit smooth waters again, so we weren't stumbling around like we were drunk all the time anymore. Tonight's towel animal: a heart.

2008-05-17 - Miami
We got up early and ate breakfast at the buffet before disembarking from the ship. We took a bus to the airport and caught our flight home.

Yesterday was the first monthaversary for Tracy and me. Thus far, things have been going exceptionally well. Tracy came up to my house after I got off work. She showed up wearing a dress and looking quite nice; she's a jeans-and-t-shirt kind of girl so I wasn't expecting it. I gave her some chocolates, and she gave me a card she made (because she's quite the artist) and a pair of boxer shorts (inside joke). I took her out for dinner at Captain James Landing, a seafood restaurant shaped like a big boat. Great food, but horrid music.

After dinner, we went back to my house and hung out until Guitar Hero at Fletchers was supposed to start. We were a few minutes late getting there to set up but turnout has been pretty low recently so it wasn't a big deal; the guy waiting there to play actually thought it was supposed to start at 10 PM instead of 9 PM, so he didn't mind when we rolled in around 9:15 or so. We played GH for a few hours, and eventually everybody else left, so we shut down early around 12:40. We finished our beers and went home. Before we left, we were told to talk to the new owner to see if we would be continuing our GH night; he said to call them on Monday, but from the way it sounds, it looks like it might get canceled.

This entire past month has been nothing short of exhilarating and fantastic.

Also, I am spinning at a rave(!?!) in Dundalk on Saturday, opening for Tittsworth.

It's been quite a while since I was on here last, so I am a bit behind on everyone's journals.

I will be in the ATL sometime over Christmas break; specific dates are still TBA, but I have to be back here in Baltimore for a DJ gig on the 29th. Pat and Sinno are also heading down; I think both are returning on the 27th and I will probably ride back with one of them, though I will most likely fly down by myself since they are leaving earlier than I am.

I have now been running the Guitar Hero night at Fletcher's for the past couple months with this totally awesome girl named Tracy. I went to a computer show a few weekends ago and played Rock Band, and the guys running the booth were impressed with my l33t riddim skillz and approached me about paying me to help run tournaments and such.

School is going pretty well. I have a final exam on Wednesday, but it shouldn't be too hard.

Also, right now I am happier than I can ever remember being.

That is all.

I've been playing the hell out of some Guitar Hero recently. Every Wednesday night at Fletcher's, they have it up on the projector in the back of the bar.

Tonight, Unwritten Law was partying there (I guess they just had a show or something). The singer was getting pretty cocky, so I had to put him in his place. They were all playing on Medium, but I play on Expert, so I totally kicked his ass.

FWIW, here are my rankings:

Update

It's been a while since my last real update. Hmm, let's see, started taking classes again, working on my M.S. in Computer Science. Work is paying for it, so I may as well cash in on it while the cashing-in is good. It's a ten class program, and I've already finished my first semester with an 'A' (Foundations of Algorithms). This semester I'm taking Foundations of Computer Architecture. 8 homeworks (of which only 6 count towards my final grade, with the other two counting as extra credit), a midterm, and a final. Plus, the professor already has the lecture notes typed up, and he even prints them out and gives them to us each class, so I don't even really have to take notes. Plus, I've already had most of this material while at gatech as an undergrad, so it should be pretty cake this semester.

My cat, Whitey, has been having some issues. When I picked him up from the vet's boarding facilities after returning from the ATL over Christmas, they told me that he was hypercalcemic (elevated calcium levels), anemic, and had shown signs of kidney failure, in addition to losing his appetite shortly before I left. The vet suspected lymphoma, so she referred me to a specialist. We're still in the diagnostic stages, but after a bunch of vet bills, Whitey is now on 5 oral medications and 2 subcutaneous ones. Poor kitty :(

I've had a few DJ gigs up at Shorty's. A few weeks ago I was invited for my first Saturday gig there, and it went very well. A friend had brought down her friend from Philly who is also a DJ, and he MC'ed over my beats and wants us to come do a show up in Philly sometime, but it's still tentative. Speaking of, I finally got around to posting another mix, available at http://gtf.org/ricecake/audio/. It's from August 23, 2006, when I was on my friends' internet radio show (The Underground Sound) on FaderWave.

I took some pics of my new bike, a 2006 Kawasaki Ninja 650R (EX650). Adam showed me the eBay auction for it, so on Monday of last week I rode down there with a friend from work who has a large pick-up truck. I offer the guy cash for it, and he takes it so we load up the bike into his truck. I had no tags for it, so I leave it at my friend's house and go home. I buy insurance on Tuesday, and on Wednesday I went to the MVA to get title work and temporary tags for it. I finally got to ride it for the first time (excluding the short test ride before I bought it) today. John and I went on a 60-mile ride to Brighton Dam so he could pick up a bow-and-arrow hunting license.

    <lj:music>Fat Boys - Wipeout</lj:music>

Jeff and I went for a nice long 80 mile ride today up Harford Road. It has lots of nice turns and curves. We were on our way back, and I was going slightly too fast for this one sharp turn. I went off the road up the embankment of fallen leaves, rode it for about 20 feet or so, and tried to hit the brakes. Due to all of the leaves, I did not have any traction, so the bike just slid, until I tried to get it back on the road. The bike went down, and I went over the handlebars and rolled a couple feet. I banged my knee on something as I was rolling but am otherwise fine. My handlebars are a bit bent now, and my headlight is pointing higher than it should be.

Some pics that Jeff took with his camera phone:

Edit [2006-07-10]: Here's is Jeff's assessment of the situation:

From: Jeff
Sent: 2006-07-10 08:31
To: CafeBaltimore list
Subject: Re: Motorbikes

Marcus is probably one our best skilled riders in our group. I let him go in front through loch raven reservoir (btw, awesome ride through there) because I knew he could lean it further. The first time through, he lost me on the first turn because he had his bike leaned all the way over. It was crazy how he pulled away in the turn. When we came through the second time, he was way ahead of me when he wrecked so I did not even see it. I came upon him and all I saw was the taillights in the leaves. I actually first thought it was a small forest fire and a guy was stomping it out. Then I realized it was Marcus so I jumped off my bike and picked his up for him since I did not know if he was hurt. Then Marcus said he was fine and had a big smile on his face that lasted the rest of the weekend.

The turn was a very low speed hairpin left-hand turn. Marcus did not go off road until the very end of the turn. As he exited the turn, he came out very wide and drove along a berm. The berm was actually steeper looking than it appears in the picture. He tried to go up the burm and then ride it back down; kind of like carving a bowl/pool on a skateboard. But as he was going around the turn on the hill the bike was too upright and the bike layed over on it's right hand side (bending the throttle side of the bar). So the bike probably slipped on the wet leaves, but the bike did not fall that far since he fell into the hill. He may or may not have went over the handlebars. I think he might fallen more to the side and forward. He got a small bump on his left knee so that might have hit the handlebar. The handlebar I think bent from hitting the ground. The leaves acted as a cushion I believe.

Not sure if Jeremy's bike would have made any difference. Marcus would have just been at the limit of the CB-1 and probably would have wrecked at a slightly higher speed. It is just Marcus's mentality. He likes the lean. He is the anti-squid. I think it is better for him to reach the limits on his bike before he gets a bike with a much higher limit.
And a follow-up email:
From: Jeff
Sent: 2006-07-10 08:34
To: CafeBaltimore list
Subject: Re: Motorbikes

Oh I forgot one thing. His equipment seems not to have played a factor. He might have avoided the bump on his knee if he was wearing pants with knee protection. I recommend the BMW summer riding pants to anyone. I think Marcus had been planning on making that purchase. But in the end he got really lucky with his injuries.
to which I replied that I probably wouldn't have taken the turn nearly as fast if I weren't wearing my jacket. I do plan on getting the BMW summer pants. Having good gear definitely instills confidence in the riding.

Los Angeles

Just got back last night from spending a week in Los Angeles.

I flew in on Tuesday, which required me to go from BWI-->ATL-->IND-->LAX, taking 11 hours total, since Airtran doesn't fly directly to LAX from BWI and taking the direct flight from ATL-->LAX would have cost about twice as much.

When I landed my cousin Hyun-Jung picked me up from the airport and we met the rest of the family (both of my sisters, my mom, three other cousins, two uncles, and their corresponding aunts) for dinner at some Korean restaurant. We ate at Korean restaurants almost every night out there, and apparently Korean culture says that it is bad to drink by yourself so my uncle kept feeding me soju. After dinner, I went out with the male cousins (Ricky and Hyun-Jung) to some bar in Koreatown. Hyun-Jung (I call him Danny) doesn't drink, so Ricky and I split a small bottle of Johnny Walker Black while the bartender chatted with us.

Wednesday I met Ricky and my sister Gina for lunch, since both of them (Gina was in town for work so she went there earlier and is staying later than me) worked very close to the hotel I was staying in in downtown L.A. We ate at CPK, which is about the same as elsewhere. They went back to work and I took a nap at the hotel. Before dinner, we went to visit my grandparents, who are now staying in a convalescent hospital (nursing home). Dinner was at another Korean restaurant, with more soju.

On Thursday, my sister Rosie, my cousin Hey-Sung, and I drove around Beverly Hills and saw the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits. My dad flew in also, and dinner was pretty much the same as Wednesday.

On Friday my parents, sisters, and Hey-Sung went to the Getty Center. We took the garden tour, which showed how the landscaping and such played into the whole design of the museum (which is very geometrical in nature). After the tour, we wandered around the various pavilions looking at paintings, sculptures, and photographs, and walked around the big central garden. For dinner, I got my first taste of In-N-Out Burger, which is quite delicious. Unfortunately, I didn't find out about their "secret" menu until just now so I didn't get a chance to try one Animal Style. When we got back to downtown we moved from the Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown to the Westin Bonaventure. Friday night, we were supposed to meet with Ricky and my other cousin Hyun-Sun (Tiffany) but stuff happened and they couldn't make it, so Rosie, Gina, Hey-Sung, and I had some drinks at the rooftop bar on top of The Standard hotel. We went back to the hotel, and for some reason (they claim it was because it was the holiday weekend so things were slow) they cut the power to the whole hotel around 1:00 AM. Ricky and his friend Will picked me up around 1:45 AM and we went out to some after-hours Korean trance club. That closed at 6:00, so then we went to some other underground after-after-hours garage party club and stayed until about 10:00 or 11:00. I saw people dancing, swinging glowsticks on strings. Now I've been to my share of raves but I've never seen people doing crazy stuff like these people. One guy looked like he had some serious nunchuck skills when he was doing his thing. Will had those color-changing LEDs and I saw some girl use them to do the ball dance, and in the darkness it really looked like she was holding some magic glowing orb. After the party we crashed at Will's place in West LA and watched some Michel Gondry videos.

Saturday I woke up around 17:00 and went back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. We went out for Brazilian barbeque at the M Grill but I was exhausted so went immediately to sleep after dinner.

Sunday was spent at SeaWorld San Diego. On the way there, I heard some noise that sounded like an elephant, then a couple seconds later we saw some car roll over 4 or 5 times on the interstate about 5 car lengths ahead of us. Luckily we were able to stop without getting hit, so we got out and called 911, along with about 20 other people since everyone has cell phones nowadays. The driver got out of the car and seemed OK, but the woman sitting in the passenger side was a bit banged up, but definitely alive, so we contined on to the park. Unfortunately the Penguin Encounter exhibit was closed but we did see most of the other things. We were waiting in line for the Journey to Atlantis ride but one of the cars got stuck so they shut it down while we were waiting. On the way home we stopped at a Burger King which was connected to a (closed for the night) Rice King.

On Monday we met with our cousin Jenny on our dad's side who used to live in GA. Jenny has two kids, Michelle and Patrick, and the last time I saw them, they were still little little kids. Now Michelle is going into 11th grade and Patrick is able to talk. We ate lunch with them, and also with a couple aunts and several nephews and nieces from my dad's side. We had no idea that our family was so large. For the longest time growing up, I wasn't aware that I even had any cousins. Dinner was at some Korean BBQ/sushi buffet, so I stuffed my face full of sushi and sashimi, and of course more soju.

Tuesday morning I had to catch an 8:00 flight, taking the same route in reverse (LAX-->IND-->ATL-->BWI). I went ahead and checked in online the night before, but I didn't have a printer so I couldn't print my boarding passes, but I figured I could print them out at the kiosks at the airport. Unfortunately, LAX lacks these kiosks so I had to stand in line with everyone else. I get through security and grab a quick breakfast, then jump on the plane. Everything was pretty uneventful until I landed in ATL around 17:30. Rosie, Hey-Sung, and my dad also flew back on Tuesday, but their flight wasn't until 10:30, and my flight was a little late, so they landed about an hour after I did, and we met up. The plan was for them to hang out at the airport with me until my flight, but my flight kept getting pushed back so eventually they left. I finally got on the plane around 21:30, and we were in the air at 22:15. My flight was supposed to leave at 19:12. They said it was because of all the rain in the DC area, but it was probably the pilots that wanted to watch fireworks. Finally, I get home a little after midnight. I decided to take the day off work today to recover.

After work today Jeff and I went to C-Mart in Joppatowne so he could have a look at their kitchen appliances, but he did not see anything worthwhile. On the way home, we stopped at this go-kart track. We got there right after some learning center group did, and the place was seriously understaffed, so we watched them go around the track for a few sessions. After that, we got to go on the slick track (9 HP karts (the fast track karts were only 5 HP (which was good since the kids seemed to have some problems with running into each other, even though all the karts had NO BUMPING in huge letters on the back))). There were three go-karts: two fast ones, and one that was out of tune and not as fast. During our first session, Jeff's wheel fell off the go-kart, so they let us go again for free, but Jeff had to use the slower go-kart since that was the only other one out there. The track was a fairly short simple oval, but it was fun. Since we were the only two people on the track, it wasn't a big deal to spin out, so we were sliding them all over the place. I definitely gained a greater intuition on how to keep control of the vehicle when the tires have broken free, and got to practice my oversteering. My arms are sore now from all the opposite locking.

Just as I was leaving work today, I got a call from my credit union. Some fuckers charged a couple thousand dollars on my credit card: about $2000 or so in Italy and $800 at MIT(?), among others. They went ahead and blocked my card to prevent any further charges. Of course, they called me after 5:00 on a Friday, so I can't really do anything about it until Monday probably. This means I am stuck this weekend with no ATM access. FUCKING SHIT!

At least tomorrow should be fun; I get to DJ at Erik and Dave's moving out party, after not touching my Technics in over a year. Let's hope it goes well and that my skiz-illz to pay the biz-illz haven't deteriorated too much.

Started work on Cafe Baltimore last night. I've been working on it on my local machine, but I haven't uploaded it to the site yet; right now it's just a placeholder. Eventually I think it will be a pretty nice motorcycle information site. I will probably move all my motorcycle pics from my site to the other one.
